The idea behind this book is to help the reader understand the basic principles of agricultural activities and their environment. This can be done by dividing agricultural activities into five primary categories: cultivation, harvesting, livestock raising, forestry products production, and fishery products production. The book then discusses the important aspects of these activities including planting or seeding crops or livestock; harvesting or killing animals for food; maintaining trees for timber products; maintaining fish stocks. These activities are also discussed in the context of soil characteristics, climate and seasonal changes, land use prior to plant establishment, weed control systems and other factors that affect the productivity. The book includes a number of topics that have been ignored or not widely studied in current agricultural research literature. This includes need for diversification of agricultural activities to minimize the threat of environmental deterioration, value chain analysis for farmers business organization, proper management of farm buildings to achieve maximum productivity from small marginal acreages, etc. In order to achieve maximum productivity from small marginal acreages, this book does not claim that better agricultural practice can be demonstrated by following a particular emphasis on a particular aspect of agriculture alone. The need is to formulate a sustainable integrated approach to farming that would provide for multiple benefits such as food security, employment, environmental protection and income generation. The book has been written primarily for the use of agricultural students in colleges and universities, but is also useful for professionals engaged in agricultural development activities. Detailed scientific discussions are avoided so that the subject matter can be covered adequately with simplicity yet sufficient depth for gaining basic understanding of the principles. This book will be of use to all students of agriculture in universities, colleges, agriculture extension training centers, or people employed in extension services or research centers. The book will also be useful for decision makers in the government agencies. The examples used are all from India to make it easy for the reader to understand.
